Word of Mouth: June 4

From your friends at Isthmus, Madison's alt-weekly.

What we're eating

Linda Falkenstein, Isthmus features editor:

On a recent trip to Door County, I made the pilgrimage to Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant in Sister Bay. Yeah, the place with the goats on the roof. (Did you know they have a goat cam?) Goats aside, I ordered the thin, cardamom-spiced Swedish pancakes with lingonberries and became obsessed. So I've been making them at home with this recipe from the book A Real American Breakfast by Bill and Cheryl Alters Jamison. My lingonberries are from a jar I bought at Al Johnson's, but the pancakes are just as good with maple syrup. And do please support a local maple syrup producer.

What we're watching

Jenie Gao, contemporary artist, muralist, and printmaker in Madison:

Everyone should watch Knock Down the House. The film follows four women running for political office against incumbents. It's an immersive dive into what it takes to run and how steep the barriers are. These barriers prevent us from having elected officials who are truly connected to issues that affect us the most. Whether people agree with who steps up to challenge the system isn't the question. The deeper question is whether in a system that claims to be just, it ought to be this difficult for representation to matter and for power to change hands.

Who we're following

Drew Hartburg, Isthmus videographer:

I recently had the pleasure of working alongside @musteikispaulius (Instagram). Not only was he amazing to work with, but his photography is incredible. I highly recommend gracing your own feed with his portraiture!

What we're drinking

Hillary Gunn, marketing coordinator at Majestic Theatre:

A Commuter Kolsh at One Barrel Brewing Company. I love going to One Barrel because it’s right by my apartment and we can get a classic kolsh and enjoy board/card games while waiting for them to cook up one of Fraboni's pepperoni pizzas. I also love this match because both options allow me to support local businesses!

What we're listening to

Cat Capellaro, Isthmus arts & culture editor:

While driving around the spring blossoms of New England I heard my idol Terry Gross interview the amazing rapper, singer flutist Lizzo on Fresh Air. Lizzo is a fierce unapologetic black feminist. And holy cow, can she sing! Check out the show and then put "Boys" into your dance party rotation. The video is freakin' awesome.

Where we're shopping

Julianne Suleski, wedding planner at The Madison Club:

I just purchased my first pair of Rothy's shoes, and I am a HUGE fan. These were an expensive, but worthwhile, investment for someone like me who is on her feet all day. And the best part: they are machine washable! If you're going for the pointed flat, I'd recommend buying a half size bigger. Seriously – try them and fall in love for yourself.
