Word of Mouth: July 10

From your friends at Isthmus, Madison's alt-weekly.

What we're listening to

Cat Capellaro, Isthmus arts & culture editor:

Great journalism can be the gateway to magical musical experiences. That's how it happened for me after reading a New Yorker article "Rhiannon Giddens and What Folk Music Means." It's a comprehensive profile of the roots musician, written by John Jeremiah Sullivan, which also details the great black forerunners of folk music, reframing the idea that folk music is for and by white folks. Giddens has an astoundingly versatile voice and on the recommendation of the article, I started with "Factory Girl." It's a spooky ballad, and she's accompanied by her talented percussionist husband. Goosebumps.

What we're watching

Candice Wagener, Isthmus contributor:

Stranger Things, of course! My whole family was hyped when season three finally hit Netflix on July 4. Beyond the thrilling storylines and cliffhangers in every episode, I get totally nostalgic for all the rad 1980s symbolism –– dirt bikes, tube socks, blue eyeshadow, the heyday of shopping malls, and the coolest boombox ever (which I had in pink), and I love that my kids can get a better idea of what it was like to grow up in the '80s.

What we're eating

Victoria Boucher, campaign director at Community Shares of Wisconsin:

Radish greens! I learned just a few weeks ago that you could eat the greens of radishes (as well as turnips, carrots, and more!) and I have been delighted in trying new recipes since. Thanks to a friendly, informative vendor at the Dane County Farmers' Market, these elusive greens have now worked their way into quiches and stir fries in my kitchen. They have a fragrant, spicy flavor and I highly recommend giving them a try.

MMoCA's 61st annual Art Fair on the Square

One of the Midwest's most popular and highly regarded outdoor celebrations of the arts will return to the Capitol Square July 13-14 as MMoCA presents the 61st annual Art Fair on the Square. With its mix of music, entertainment, and outdoor dining, as well as nearly 500 juried artists exhibiting paintings, prints, photographs, sculpture, jewelry, handmade clothing and accessories, and fine craft, the fair draws nearly 200,000 visitors to Madison's Capitol Square. Find more info here.

What we're reading

Sandy Tabachnick, Isthmus contributor:

Richard Lloyd Parry’s, Ghosts of the Tsunami, is one of those rare books that combines the natural and supernatural through the cool, steady voice of a journalist. Parry was the Japan correspondent for The Times (London) in March 2011 when a 9.0 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami that killed thousands in northeastern Japan. Afterwards, Parry visited a remote, hard-hit area 200 miles north of Tokyo and encouraged survivors to tell their stories. His voice grows distant in the narrative as Parry gives room to the Japanese people to share stories of loss, sorrow, strength, and visitations from dead victims.

What we're drinking

Devin Renner, marketing director at True Coffee Roasters:

Kombucha from Forage. I’m what you might politely call a beer and pizza kind of guy. Terms like "all natural" and "organic" are not terms I seek out on a label whilst shopping. Needless to say kombucha wouldn't typically be found in my fridge. That is of course until I got my arm twisted into trying Forage’s take on it. It’s light with a subtle fruitiness. It doesn’t have that powerful hoppiness or sour tang that often comes with kombucha. Instead you get just a delightful product that easily works with any meal. Even pizza.

What we're playing

Hillary Gunn, marketing coordinator at Majestic Theatre:

As a lifelong Harry Potter fan, I squealed in excitement when I found out Niantic was creating a Harry Potter version of Pokemon Go, called Wizards Unite. I'm not a big video game OR phone game person –– but I can't be the only nerd casting spells up and down the isthmus. Can I?
