Can we finally get over the National Rifle Association's nonsense about "law-abiding citizens?"
The brothers who are all but certain to have committed the awful bombings and other mayhem in Boston did not have criminal records. But they were armed to the teeth, as any "law-abiding citizen" should have the right to be -- or actually, are encouraged to be -- according to the NRA.
What's more, while the FBI investigated Tamerlan Tsarnaev (the now dead brother) for potential terrorist links (and found none), the NRA has actually opposed legislation that would deny the legal purchase of a gun to anyone on the terrorist watch list. That's right. Even if Tsarnaev were suspected of being a terrorist, the NRA would have defended his right to the means to commit mass murder.
The worthlessness of the NRA's law-abiding citizen mantra was also proven in Newtown, where mass murderer Adam Lanza was law-abiding until the moment when he used the legally obtained weapons bought by his law-abiding mother to kill her in her law-abiding sleep.
And every year, something like 20,000 American gun owners are law-abiding right up until they break the law that makes it illegal for a person to take his own life.
In NRA World, I guess the deadly weapon would be magically plucked from the law-abiding citizen just as he begins to cross the line into criminality. Obviously, this is ridiculous on its face.
Just like the NRA itself.
