Governor Scott Walker is now paying $160,000 for nothing.
The governor has said repeatedly that he is not the target of a John Doe investigation in Milwaukee County, yet his campaign has transferred another $100,000 to his legal defense fund, bringing the total amount dedicated to defend him against nothing to $160,000.
The John Doe could be going any number of directions, but the thing I find most implausible about Walker's claims is that he didn't know about a secret computer server set up to do campaign business only twenty-five feet from his Milwaukee County Executive's office.
I worked for eight years in almost identical physical circumstances. There's no way I wouldn't know about this sort of thing. In fact, there's no way I would hire people who would do something this stupid.
There are two possibilities here. Either Walker knew what was going on and is not being honest about it, or he was incompetent and set a very wrong tone in supervising his office.
One thing's for certain. If Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm has anything to charge the governor with he should do it now. If voters were to find out that the governor was subject to charges after election day, they would be justified in feeling that democracy had been short-changed.
