Dianne and I went to see West Side Story at Overture last weekend. It got me to thinking about what West Side Story would be like if it were about my people here on the west side of Madison. So I rewrote some of the lyrics.
"Maria (We'll See Ya)"
We'll see ya.
It's still too cold here in March.
And so we'll see ya.
To Barbados we are bound. How wonderful that sound. Can be.
We'll see ya. Say it proud. We wouldn't think of staying. Say it soft. We're ashamed of how much we're paying.
We don't care. In March we will never stop saying. We'll see yaaa.
"There's a Place (Space) For Us"
There's a space for us,
A parking space for us.
Right in front of the grocery store,
The bagel place and more.
There's a space for us,
Not like on the Is-Isthmus.
Time on the meters,
With time to spare.
Time for us to go,
Every where.
"Tonight"
Tonight, tonight.
Won't be just any night.
Tonight we will stay up way past nine.
Tonight, tonight.
We'll feed the kids just right.
And then we will go out,
To Sundance.
Today, we planted all the flowers, We mowed the lawn and hedges, And staked our heirloom tomatoes, And tied them up just right.
Oh, kids, don't fight
Your night will be alright.
We'll rent that new DVD Something about "Twilight" Tonight!
If only Leonard Bernstein had lived in Madison.
