"Teeth and Hair" is the first track on The Blue God, an album released about six years ago by Honor Among Thieves. They are one of Madison's most venerated bands, serving up their blues-y mix of jazz, rock, klezmer and funk for more than twenty years. The song is also featured in When the World Runs Fast, a DVD created by Paul Ewen that celebrates the band and its musical path. Ewen, a nephew of the Thieves' lead guitarist and vocalist Andy Ewen, shot the band performing the song at the Annex in May 2001.
The live concert footage follows below.
Ewen describes the track: "The lyrics are written by the great P.S. Mueller and the music by the as great Andy Ewen." It is only one of two clips of footage shot for the DVD he published online, the other being Honor Among Thieves' performance of "Technical Jelly," which is from their 1996 album The Vision and a Friend. "Notice Andy Ewen's transition into a little Hendrix tune called 'Who Knows,'" writes Paul Ewen. "The whole band rocked so hard on this song."
In addition to Ewen, the members of Honor Among Thieves are: Doug DeRosa, bass and vocals; Randal Harrison (aka Randy Hoecherl), violin and vocals; and Joey B. Banks on the drums. The band is still going strong, with their next live show set for the Harmony Bar on the evening of Saturday, Nov. 18.
