4 Months,3 Weeks and 2 Days: A pair of college roommates (Anamaria Marinca and Laura Vasiliu) endure a long day's journey into night in this quietly harrowing account of a back-alley abortion in late-Ceausescu Romania. Although the movie works beautifully on its own documentary-like terms, it deserves extra points for tackling the issue head-on rather than dancing around it, as so many recent American movies have done.
Be Kind Rewind: Michel Gondry's lark of a movie stars Jack Black and Mos Def as a pair of numbskulls who make their own ramshackle versions of movies from the past. Black shines, and the movie is sweetly nostalgic about the good old days of VHS.
