A Serious Man: Circa 1967, a plague of troubles visits the story's Job, a university professor and family man (Michael Stuhlbarg). The Coen brothers have made one of their best and most personal movies, rich with ideas and packed with existential jokes.

The Time Traveler's Wife: A genetic disorder hurtles an unwilling man (Eric Bana) to different destinations in his own timeline, even as life's little landmarks whiz by him and his wife (Rachel McAdams). There's no epicness in this handsomely made film, and no tragedy either.
