Cloverfield: This enjoyably trashy disaster scenario allows a Godzilla-like critter to take another bite out of the Big Apple. With a point-and-shoot syntax that may require Dramamine, the movie isn't for everyone, but it definitely packs a wallop, following its band of twentysomethings into the belly of the beast.
The Savages: Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney play a brother and sister who have to escort their resentful father (Philip Bosco) through the dying process in Tamara Jenkins' admirably cold, hard look at the ties that bind.
