Sun worshipers can rejoice in the summer solstice this week, the light and heat of summer far removed from the frosty conditions of this past overlong winter. That was the setting, though, of a new music video featuring the gypsy jazz quartet Set on the snowy grounds of Forest Hill Cemetery and shot back in the chill of February, the video was created by the writer, musician, and perfomer Keeping it together in the cold were the four members of the Wail; Maggie Delaney-Potthoff on vocals, Sims Delaney-Potthoff on the mandolin, Tom Waselchuk on guitar and vocals, and John Christensen on the upright bass. Together, the group deliver their take on "Who Loves the Sun," the lead track on the 1970 classic Loaded by the seminal New York band. "They're nice people and good musicians," says Mendels(s)ohn of the Madison group, "though I might point out that Maggie's efforts to teach me to sing proved in vain." This isn't the only music video made by Mendels(s)ohn for Harmonious Wail. He has also created one of the band singing "Bury Me" (here), along with a trio of unfinished clips for their performances of "Chanson pour Henri" (here), "Joie de Vivre" (here), and "Only the Young" (here). More music by the group can be found at its MySpace page, meanwhile. The music video for the cover of "Who Loves the Sun" follows. Harmonious Wail is keeping busy on stage this summer, playing gigs in town and elsewhere on nearly a weekly basis. The band plays with special guest David Adler on Saturday, June 21 at The Brink Lounge, following this with visits to Chicago and Beloit before they return to Madison for a spate of late summer shows capped by the Midwest Gypsy Swing Festival in late August. If you have a video about Madison or by Madisonians, please consider adding it to the Isthmus YouTube group or send a message.
