Dear John: On leave from the Army, a reformed hooligan (Channing Tatum) falls for a saintly college student (Amanda Seyfried), then heads back overseas to finish his tour. After that, ill-defined and static-seeming stuff happens in this muzzy picture.

The Road: Director John Hillcoat does a solid job of adapting Cormac McCarthy's bleak novel about a father and son (Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee) wandering through a blighted American wasteland beset by some unnamed catastrophe. Mortensen works minor miracles in what is essentially a one-note role.
