Hancock: As charming as ever, Will Smith plays a homeless guy who just happens to have super-strength and the ability to fly; Jason Bateman is a public-relations guy who gives him a much-needed makeover. Like its main character, this action-comedy has its problems, but it definitely gets the job done.
Still Life: This quietly devastating film by Chinese director Jia Zhang-ke is set 150 miles upstream from the newly completed Three Gorges Dam, which required the displacement of over one million people. We follow two of them as they look for long-lost spouses, but the story is less important here than the sense of dislocation wrought by China's Great Leap Forward into capitalist frenzy.
