Revolutionary Road: In Sam (American Beauty) Mendes' cinematic adaptation of Richard Yates' great American novel, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are Frank and April Wheeler, artistic types trapped in mid-century suburbia, their marriage dissolving before their eyes. Both actors give it their best, but something important has been lost on the way from page to screen: Yates' mercilessly omniscient narrator, who revealed not just what these two said but what they thought.
