Word of Mouth 42-46

Welcome to Word of Mouth, Isthmus’ new curated newsletter. There’s a lot going on in the world — to read, to watch, to eat — and it can be overwhelming. So we’re here to help, with a weekly guide to what our staff and contributors are reading, doing and experiencing. We don’t want you to miss out on anything, whether it’s an event in Madison or a good article in The New Yorker.
Look for Word of Mouth in your inbox every Tuesday morning. Thanks for reading.

What we’re reading

Bob Koch, calendar editor:

"The Horror on the Links: The Complete Tales of Jules de Grandin, Volume One" compiles the outré adventures of Seabury Quinn's fictional sleuth. Mostly published in the iconic pulp Weird Tales beginning in the 1920s, Quinn is not as well remembered today as WT stalwarts such as H.P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury or even Wisconsin's August Derleth, but his de Grandin series was among the magazine's most popular. The de Grandin character is an irrepressible combination of Hercule Poirot and John McClane, careening through cases like Sherlock Holmes on a coke bender.

What we’re watching

Andy Adams, director, FlakPhoto Projects:

John Coltrane's A Love Supreme was one of the first jazz albums I bought as a teenager growing up in rural Wisconsin. His sound blew my mind, to put it mildly. Since then I’ve collected his records and loved his music. But, to be honest, I never learned much about the man. Last week’s PBS premiere of "Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary" was just the ticket. And if you missed the WPT broadcast, fear not  you can stream it on Roku’s PBS app (for free!) through November 20.

What we’re listening to

Chris Winterhack, marketing director:

99% Invisible, the Radiotopia podcast about "about all the thought that goes into the things we don’t think about," touches on marketing, design, tech, architecture, urban planning and more. Host Roman Mars' voice will soothe your soul while you learn about the rise of inflatable tube men

Who we're following

Sean Kennedy, digital editor:

@travelwisconsin is nothin' but fall colors these days. Fall is my favorite time of year, and I'm new to Wisconsin. Turns out this place does autumn very well.

What we’re eyeing

Courtney Lovas, events director:

The turtle rice krispie treats in the window of Kilwin's on State St. They get me every time. My very pregnant sister is having a baby shower over Thanksgiving weekend and most of my present to her will consist of these. #Cravings #FavoriteAunt

Perfect day

Catherine Capellaro, arts editor:

Saturday morning means SuperCharge Foods, where I’ll catch a morning class in Somatics from Carla Raushenbush. We’re doing gentle movements to retrain our brains to let go of tension — and it feels great! Then I’ll share a smoothie with my hubby and we’ll zoom over to Olbrich Gardens to see the remaining leaves. Plus, the Thai Pavilion will get us in the mood for spring rolls, squash curry and larp at Lao Laan Xang. At 2 pm, I’ll hit the final performance of the absurdist anti-fascist parable Rhinoceros at the Bartell Theatre. In the evening, I’ll head to campus to see Page 20 by UW dance star Jin-Wen Yu, and I want to catch Korean American EDM artist Yaeji at Union South.
