Summer is winding down, and soon the familiar daytime and evening hum of male cicadas buzzing their song in the urban forest will go silent. The noise has been particularly prominent over the waning dog days of the season, when the mercury has spiked, and the annual Tibicen crop takes to the trees for mating. Shot in late August, this photo shows the dry shell left behind by one such insect after molting. Soon the insects' familiar song will go silent, at least until next year.
