The Midwest debut of Skills Like This on Friday was well-attended by artsy-looking twenty-somethings, a perfect target audience for this quirky comedy that just might be the next Napoleon Dynamite.
Forget for a moment the post-release ad nauseam marketing campaign. Instead, think of the feeling of being in the audience for the first screening of Napoleon Dynamite. Think of unabashed reactions and punchy moments of surprised laughter. Think of being amused, really deeply amused. Think of laughing without wondering if you're laughing at the right parts. Now, you've got it. That's what it was like for those lucky enough to have snagged a ticket to Skills Like This.
A dude bro, a yuppie, and a hipster walk into a Mexican restaurant. So begins Skills Like This. One of the guys mentions bank robbery. Without missing a beat, failed writer Max gets up from the table and robs the bank across the street. He comes back to his chips and salsa with a garbage bag full of money and a serious crush on the teller who handed it over.
Unlike so many independent flicks that aim to be called comedies, Skills Like This has a plot. No spoilers here, but rest assured that the storyline includes all necessary elements for a good film: adventure, true love, and some really big hair. Oh, and the soundtrack's pretty solid, too.
The full house at the Chazen loved Skills Like This and held back no laughs, cheers, or even the occasional helpful suggestion to the characters. This film is loads of fun and, honestly, isn't that what going to the movies is all about?
