Think of it as an "old-time candy store meets Starbucks," says Jerremy Deckard, regional manager for Campus Candy, the newest candy shop on State Street. The small franchise launched in March at the University of Indiana. Owner Mark Tarnofsky then looked to expand at other college campuses. When he found a vacancy on State Street, he knew he found a perfect location. Madison's branch opened on October 29.
Campus Candy is an experience, with café-style seating, flat-screen televisions and Wi-Fi access. More than 400 candy options range from mainstream brands to old-fashioned favorites. Frozen yogurt flavors change daily; choose from Vanilla Bean, New York Cheesecake, Key Lime, Butter Pecan or Very Berry. Customers can visit Campus Candy's Facebook page and Twitter feed to see what the flavors are and even make requests.
And if you want to get creative, the whole store functions as a toppings bar.
The broad selection of treats seems to please customers, eliciting smiles "no matter how bad their days have been," says Deckard. And his recommendation for what to try? "Anything you've never tried before."
