At first I assumed the response to radio host John Slyvester's comments about Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch would be swift and unanimously condemnatory. Since I don't like to take part in beating a controversy to death, I thought my remark that what Sly said was "Limbaughesque" would get my feelings across. Ironically, I first read about the comments the day after my first (and very enjoyable) appearance on Sly in the Morning.
However, this editorial from the Cap Times was absolutely pathetic:
Unlike so many media personalities who have no sense of propriety or proportion, however, Sly is mature enough to admit when he steps over the line.
...On Wednesday, Sly sent a letter to Kleefisch apologizing for what he described as "my inappropriate comments on Monday morning's program."
But Sly understands that a radio host can be controversial without being offensive. More importantly, he is enough of a class act to acknowledge when he fails to meet that standard -- and to offer sincere and timely apologies.
I assume this means the Cap Times will be similarly impressed if Mark Belling ever apologizes for one of his racist or anti-Semitic utterances?
One need not be a "class act" to issue a three sentence formal apology for such clearly offensive comments. I have to go get the bus now...I might comment more on this later.
