The Ben Ferris Quintet is a creative music ensemble focused on original music. The group consists of Paul Dietrich, trumpet (Paul Dietrich Quintet); Nicholas Bartell, tenor (Neophonic Jazz Orchestra, Mama Digdown’s Brass Band); Paul Hastil, piano (PH Factor, New Breed); Ben Ferris, bass/leader (Ben Ferris Octet, Nuggernaut, Edi Rey y Su Salsera, Jon Hoel Trio, Gabe Burdulis Band, Darren Sterud Orchestra) and Miguel McQuade, drums (New York City).
The group’s debut album, “Home,” will be released December 16. Consisting of nine original compositions (five by Ferris, two by Bartell, two by Dietrich), the full-length album is the first recording publicized of the group and these pieces. Drawing on diverse influences from the members of the ensemble, the music can be categorized as somewhere between contemporary jazz, classical and creative music. The album was recorded at Audio for the Arts, and produced by Ben Ferris and Buzz Kemper. Buzz Kemper was also engineer. Original artwork created for the project by Geo Rutherford (Ann Arbor, Michigan).
