Beyond Likeness: Mapping the Self, an exhibition of portraiture that aims to expand our definition of the portrayal of identity, opens for a preview reception on Feb. 18th, 2016, from 5-7 p.m. Organized by Professor Barbara C. Buenger’s Curatorial Practicum, the show presents artworks across centuries, regions, and movements that demonstrate how a diverse range of artists grapple with the notion of portraiture. Beyond Likeness: Mapping the Self will be on view at the Oscar F. and Louise Greiner Mayer Gallery February 19th-April 3rd, 2016.
Jiri Anderle, Max Beckmann, Mary Bero, William Blake, Alexander Calder, Suzanne Caporael, Eugène Carrière, Elizabeth Catlett, Chuck Close, Jim Dine, Albrecht Dürer, Benjamin Duvivier, Phyllis Galembo, Ferdinand Hodler, Rockwell Kent, Käthe Kollwitz, Mary Ellen Mark, Heinrich Moshage, Alice Neel, Pablo Picasso, Germaine Richier, Antonio Saura, Natori Shunsen, Kiki Smith, Larry Towell, Sybren Valkema, Josiah Wedgwood, Ruth Weisberg and several anonymous artists produced these works from the Chazen Museum’s permanent collection.
