Join MagazineLiteracy in Madison on February 7th For Our Open Literacy Market and Magazine Sorting Event
MagazineLiteracy is dedicated to ending illiteracy and poverty by providing magazines for every age and interest to at-risk families. On Sunday, February 7, MagazineLiteracy is hosting its monthly magazine sorting event and Open Literacy Market. The event will be located at our downtown office at 119 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in Madison.
Join us-
1. Volunteers- you are a vital part of what makes our organization thrive. Help us end illiteracy and poverty one magazine at a time by sorting donations coming in from around the country and assembling donations for agencies starting at 12 p.m.
2. Literacy agencies- if you are an organization or program that reaches those in need, we invite you to pick up as many magazines and comics as desired for all ages and interests at our Open Literacy Market from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Often times, poverty and illiteracy go hand-in-hand. Over two-thirds of children in the United States living in poverty-about 12 million children-have no books at home. As a result, children in impoverished households are introduced to 30 million fewer words vital for brain development. We want to fix that. Part of our mission is to help children and people of all ages expand their knowledge and development through reading.
Magazines and comics are an especially powerful tool for literacy because they provide children and adults alike with shorter, less intimidating stories and content broken up by pictures and other graphics. The huge variety of topics and age-targeted magazines also ensures that all individuals will find reading material that fit their age and interests to keep readers engaged.
We’ve collected and delivered thousands of magazines and comics to at-risk readers across Madison via food pantries, shelters, school programs and foster care. We have over 20,000 reading materials ready to be distributed and thousands more pouring into our Madison office from across the U.S.
