American Players Theatre launches its summer season with this groundbreaking play, written by Carlyle Brown and directed by Derrick Sanders, about an African American theater company that decides to stage Shakespeare’s Richard III in 1820s New York City. Problems arise when a neighboring troupe decides to put on its own production — starring a white, major actor — in an effort to shut down the African Company for good.
