Two shows this weekend celebrate the second edition of the Local Love Fest compilation. Brad Van of metal trio Droids Attack launched the project, in which Madison bands record covers of other Madison bands' songs. This year's CD includes the Motorz covering the defunct New Recruits, Fambly Fun! covering Cribshitter, El Valiente covering National Beekeepers Society, and about a dozen others. Friday, Feb. 17, at the Frequency (9 p.m.) features Droids Attack, Helliphant, the Motorz and Fambly Fun! Saturday, Feb. 18 (9:30 p.m.), the Crystal Corner Bar hosts Big Fat Ass, Subatomic and Sons of Atom. Van has been posting updates about the compilation at facebook.com/LocalLoveFest.
Free-jazz trio Glacier's Wednesday residency at the Dragonfly Lounge started quietly last month and has gradually picked up an audience and guest performers. On Feb. 22, they'll meet with a senior generation, when Hanah Jon Taylor joins in on sax, flute and wind synth. Taylor lives in Madison but doesn't play here often, so it'll be exciting to see this veteran improviser converse with a few of the younger musicians who've been carving out a place for experimental jazz in Madison. There's no cover, and doors open at 8:30 p.m.
The Madison Music Collective continues to do its part for local jazz, and touring jazz artists too. Its winter-spring series kicks off Feb. 26 with acclaimed violinist Randy Sabien leading a quartet at the Brink Lounge.
