The Madison and Milwaukee music scenes don't frequently mix, but Surgeons in Heat are proof that when they do, something special can happen.
Guitarist and songwriter John Mayer moved to Madison from the Brew City over a year ago, leaving behind bassist William Schultz and drummer Justin Kunesh. The distance hasn't stopped the trio from making lo-fi rock that brims with infectious grooves.
The band's instrumental formula couldn't be simpler, but each one of these songs is surprisingly original and compelling. The splashes of staccato guitar on "Wanna Get Up" are restless and uneasy. The trio's restraint on "Better on Your Own" helps forge sublime and mellow pop. The steady groove runs deepest on "GT50."
This six-song EP is 20 minutes of rock 'n' roll you won't soon forget.
