John "Sly" Sylvester has been a presence on our local airwaves for decades now. He used to spin classic rock tunes during morning drive time on WIBA FM in the '80s and early '90s, before switching over to the AM dial where he could bellow his opinions full time without interruptions from Mick Jagger or Eric Clapton. He has also switched to the mid-day shift where he invented the nickname "Madison's Mid-Day Maverick" for himself.
While booking a list of guests including political pundits like state Democratic party chair Joe Wineke and the Capital Times' John Nichols, Sly has not mellowed much and his persona is less associated with the intelligent exchanges he has with people like Sen. Russ Feingold and more with his labeling of people like Mayor Dave Cieslewicz with the nickname "Mayor Man-gina."
Appropriate? Juvenile? Misogynistic? Provocative? That's up to the listener to judge. A good time to judge might be Wednesday, when Mayor Dave shows up on Sly's show at around 12:15 pm.
