Upstairs in the pizzeria, the pies are the centerpiece, with dough made from the same grain used in the beers. Bars on both levels. Family-friendly. Menu features many locally sourced meats and vegetables and house-brewed beers, with 12 on tap. Friday beer-battered fish; Saturday prime rib. Gluten-free on request. The second-floor pizzeria makes pies with crusts made from the spent "treber" from the ales. $5-$19.

Beer Here: Ole Eagle Porter from the Grumpy Troll Restaurant and Brewery
I'm a big fan of porters, especially when they come with a good story. The style emerged some 250 years ago as a beer of the English laboring class. These brews nearly vanished in the United States, though, until they were revived by homebrewers several decades back. And it was these homemade beers that deserve some credit for Ole Eagle, a traditional porter now on tap at the Grumpy Troll.

The traditional tale of Thanksgiving inspired my selection of a beer for the holiday feast this year. I went looking for a brew I could almost see served at the first Thanksgiving table; specifically, one made with wild rice. The Grumpy Troll brewpub in Mount Horeb is serving such a beer, Harvest Moon, which is aptly named for the fall season.

The Belgian pale ale emerged as an alternative to the crisp hoppy pilsner beers that are ubiquitous around the world. With a combination of sweet and fruity tones, accented by hops and dryness, this offshoot style of the Belgian brewing tradition can be a wonderful medium-bodied beer, and helps smooth the transition from the heavier, sweeter wintertime brews without venturing too far into the sharp and hoppy beers of summer. The Grumpy Troll is currently offering a version that's worth a visit. Named Bels'consin, it reflects the intersection of select Belgian ingredients and Wisconsin hops.
