When Lynne Eich retired in 2007, after 30 years as director of the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission, Isthmus writer David Medaris mused: "When you add up all the commission's tangible and intangible accomplishments, it's difficult to think of any other individual in the last three decades whose contributions toward our quality of life approach Eich's."
That's quite a commendation, but Eich earned it. Under her able leadership, the commission grew from having $5,000 in the bank and no actual office to annually dispensing nearly $500,000 in grants, supporting and sustaining the Madison area's vibrant arts community.
As she eased off into retirement, Eich had this advice for her successor: "Think big picture. Never forget that you're the public's servant and everybody counts, everybody's important. Have fun with it."
