Madison's Transit and Parking Commission approves fare increases for some bus passes, hiking 31-day passes $3 to $58 and raising the commute card rate 10 cents to $1.25 a ride. The increases go into effect Feb. 3 and are expected to raise $60,000. The cash fare will remain $2 a ride for adults.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports that the Madison school district incorrectly reported student attendance data. As a result, almost all of the scores on its schools' "report cards" will drop slightly.
The Legislative Audit Bureau reports that thousands of public workers - ranging from teachers to cabinet secretaries - are "double dipping," having retired to collect a public pension only to return to work.

U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb bars Wisconsin's Chippewa bands from hunting deer at night for the rest of the tribal season, ruling the tribes overstepped their authority in allowing the hunt without getting state approval. She calls on both sides to negotiate over next year's hunt.
The State Journal reports that Madison has reached a tentative deal with Hovde Properties to provide $3.4 million in tax incremental financing to build a $60 million, 14-story mixed-use building between West Johnson and Dayton streets. The project will provide new administrative offices for the Madison Fire Department.
