Today's image is titled on Sunday, April 15. Perry describes shooting it: "I got dirty for this shot (and a few others of these pretty little flowers, whatever they are -- woodland crocus??) but it was worth it! First woodland flowers of the spring.'
Arboretum naturalist Kathy Miner led a similar walk through the expansive fields and forests of the preserve on the south side of town on Sunday, April 8, this one specifically in search of woodland wildflowers. She introduces the tour:
The tour route was essentially a repeat of last week's -- up and across Longenecker Gardens then down "the wildflower trail" in Gallistel Woods. There are certainly other places in the Arboretum where woodland wildflowers can be found, but they are not as handy to the Visitor Center. Wingra Woods, across the road from Gallistel, has crinkleroot, toothworts, red trillium, and other species; and the Noe Woods/Leopold Pines area, west and south of the Curtis Prairie, has some unique, northern-style understory plants, such as starflower (Trientalis borealis), Canada mayflower (Maianthemum canadense), gaywings (Polygala pauciflora), and partridge-berry (Mitchella repens). But on this chilly and overcast day we went for the "bird in the hand" and headed for Gallistel.
The Arboretum also provides a photo gallery of spring wildflowers taken in April 2006.
The next Arboretum Walk will be held on Sunday, April 22, in the Grady Tract south of the Beltline. Participants are advised to be on the lookout for 'Pasque flowers, prairie smoke, early buttercup and early migrating birds."
