A record number of people participated in the 27th annual Crazylegs Classic run and walk in downtown Madison on Saturday, April 26. "The total number of participants was 17,296, with 11,542 runners and 5754 walkers," notes the University of Wisconsin-Madison Athletic Department, which is the beneficiary of the fundraiser named for the legendary Wisconsin football player and longtime athletic director Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch.
This photo shows the entire length of State Street filled to the brim with participants in the walking portion of the event, and is one of a photo essay of Crazylegs 2008, focusing on the runners' reactions to the ascent up Mansion Hill on Wisconsin Avenue at the outset of the race; a handful of the several dozen , , , and Madison Miscellany.
