The sun rises over Lake Monona
Today's image is titled The sun rises over Lake Monona and was photographed by Roz Almond.
The photo depicts Madison's second largest lake on a cold, late autumn morning, with heat escaping from the water as ice forms along the shore. Lake Monona generally freezes in mid-December, with a median date of Dec. 15 as reported by the Wisconsin State Climatology Office. They also provide a history of freezing and thawing of the lake, running from 1851 through this year. Though the cold temperatures last week made it possible that Monona might freeze by the middle of the month, or at least shortly thereafter, the warmer conditions this week make that unlikely.
