Gotham bagels ready to open
Today's image is titled "Gotham Bagels ready to open" and was photographed by Kristian Knutsen.
Downtown residents, workers and visitors have only one more day to wait until the opening of Gotham bagels on the 100 block of East Mifflin Street off the Square. Though the "Grand Opening" for the new bagel emporium is slated for Saturday, March 31, patrons will be able to stop in for sustenance starting Friday morning as Gotham's staff get up to speed. In addition to bagels (which will come in plain, egg, sesame, salt, onion, poppy seed, cinnamon raisin and, eventually, pumpernickel and other flavors), noshers will be able to get soups, sandwiches, coffee, and other refreshments, such as a rosemary-spiced cranberry drink, all thanks to the vision of co-owner Joe Gaglio, who teaches culinary classes at MATC.
This photo shows a party for friends and employees of the business, held on the evening of Friday, March 23.
Anticipation for the bagel joint started when the Capital Times reported its future opening at the beginning of last December. Excitement built when storefront sign was erected a week into March, followed several days later by a sneak preview given to a visitor from Cafe Montmartre. By the middle of the month, co-owner Ian Gurfield revealed the planned opening for the end of this week, and dispelled rumors that bagels need New York City water to be authentic. More discussion about this highly anticipated addition to downtown Madison is ongoing on at TDPF.
The tomorrow's opening of Gotham is only the first step in a broader vision for the project, with discussions under way about a catering operation, a rooftop cafe, and a box lunch venture.
