The Utne Reader has nominated Wisconsin People & Ideas -- the quarterly journal of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters -- for a 2006 Utne Independent Press Award. To give you some idea of how prestigious this nomination is, consider the critical mass of the other nominees in the category of Local/Regional Coverage: The Oxford American, The Stranger and The Chicago Reader. Heady company for WP&I, which publishes fiction, poems and art along with articles about the state's cultural, scientific and socio-political attributes.
The Utne Reader has been bestowing these awards for 18 years now, recognizing the best independent journals and magazines, alternative weeklies and zines -- those sectors of the print media that have not yet been consumed by media conglomerates. This year's awards will be announced in the magazine's January/February 2007 issue.
