More Later will debut in a series of workshops at Greenwich Village's Cornelia Street Cafe in New York City.
Lou and Peter Berryman and their witty, Wisconsin-themed folk tunes are known far beyond the state's borders. They've been recorded by notable folkies like Claudia Schmidt, and Pete Seeger said "A Chat With Your Mother" is "one of the great American folk songs of the 20th century." Now the accordion-toting act will be honored in New York City's Greenwich Village, where the folk revival of the 1960s took shape.
On Feb. 9 and March 9, the Cornelia Street Cafe will stage workshops of More Later, a play about four performers wondering if it's time to retire from the music business. Like the Berrymans, the characters are Madisonians in their mid-60s. That's no accident: Peter wrote More Later's book after New York actor and cabaret singer Brian Tom O'Connor suggested the duo make a musical. The Berrymans embraced the idea and asked O'Connor to direct.
Lou and Peter are excited More Later will debut at the venue that launched the careers of Suzanne Vega and Eve Ensler. It's one of their favorite places to perform.
"We are, though guardedly, over the moon, if a person can be guardedly over the moon," Lou says.
