I found this disc sitting in my box here at the Isthmus office a couple of weeks ago. There wasn't much to it. Just a cover picture of MC Starr standing alone in front of the Triangle Market on State Street. No jewel case. No liner notes.
Then I popped it into my computer at home and listened a few times. And I was quickly reminded that MC Starr doesn't need packaging to make himself look good. His raps and tracks speak for themselves.
The album's production work includes extended organ chord samples that give "My Set" a melodramatic vibe. A fluttering flute riff frames the lyrical chaos of "What a Day." Corner Store is a collection of smooth and authoritative rap that reveals why Starr has become a leader in local hip-hop.
