In John Muir, University of the Wilderness, the Chance ensemble explores the connections between wilderness experiences and alternative chamber music by setting select texts by Muir to music. Known as “Father of the National Parks” and for his conservation advocacy, Muir’s words are perhaps even more important today than they were when originally written. Trust Wisconsin Public Radio’s Norman Gilliland to deliver them in the most beautiful and impactful way while Chance takes the audience for a “walk in the woods”– from the comfort of your seat.
The Chance Ensemble consists of composers and performers Cheryl Leah and Ed Willett (a.k.a. Chance). They began collaborating in Los Angeles in 1986. On their website they describe the program thus: “A musical landscape surrounds you, excites you to follow around the next bend, and delivers you to a deep appreciation for one of our country's most influential naturalists.”
This performance is presented by the Wisconsin Union Theater’s Performing Arts Committee. This project was supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. WORT, 89.9 FM is the media sponsor.
