Matthew Sweet
media release: Matthew Sweet will perform with his acoustic trio on Saturday, October 5, at the Stoughton Opera House; Abe Partridge opens. Sweet, who’s been performing his first live shows in nearly four years, will be touring as an acoustic trio this October and November where he'll be joined by his longtime bassist Paul Chastain and guitarist Adrian Carter (Amy Ray Band). The acoustic performances will feature fresh arrangements of Sweet’s classic hits as well as rarely heard deep-cuts. Live, he's been mentioning his new album-in-progress, Midsommar, inspired by the film of the same name and one of his psychedelic cat drawings (making art is his other creative outlet, check it out HERE).
The a lt-rock trailblazer kicked off 2024 with the release of an archival live record of one of his most fabled performances—a July 4, 1993 headlining set at WXRT’s ‘Taste of Chicago,’ Live at Grant Park Chicago July 1993. Originally recorded by Metro Mobile Recording for Chicago radio station WXRT, the blistering 17-song set includes hits and fan-favorites including “Girlfriend,” “I’ve Been Waiting,” “The Ugly Truth,” and a spirited cover of John Lennon’s “Crippled Inside.” Matthew is backed by Richard Lloyd (Television) on lead guitar, Will Rigby (the dB’s) on drums, and Tony Marsico (Cruzados, Bob Dylan) on bass and background vocals.
Celebrating over three decades as a recording artist — his album Altered Beast just turned 31 — Sweet shared some of the vinyl albums that influenced him with Spin Magazine for their "5 Albums I Can't Live Without" series. He explains, "The vinyl experience as a whole can’t be beat. It was so important to me as a kid. I’d go buy the record, bring it straight home, go to my bedroom, close the door, scrutinize the artwork—it all felt very anti-parent. Now parents and kids are bonding over the same music.”
