Music Perspectives: A look into a professional musician’s life
Lindsay Flowers, faculty associate of oboe
How do you find personal stability amid ever-changing life circumstances? How have you survived throughout this past year of the COVID pandemic when almost everything was cancelled or moved online? Do you have success stories of daily habits resulting in long term changes? Do you know the inner workings of what it takes to be a professional performing and teaching musician? How do you think musicians maintain their artistry and appear effortless in their technique during uncontrollably stressful situations, such as performing a solo for thousands of listeners?
Join Lindsay Flowers, Faculty Associate of Oboe at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Mead Witter School of Music and English Hornist of the Madison Symphony Orchestra as she speaks of her personal journey to becoming a professional musician and how it prepared her to be resilient when over 90% of her performing work disappeared due to the COVID pandemic.
Learn about the self-actualization and consistency that her warm-up routine provides, and consider your morning ritual during this challenging time, to determine if it inches you daily towards your goals. Throughout the presentation, Lindsay will also share her research findings from her dissertation, a curriculum design, “School of Music Student-Generated Community Engagement Projects” and how it has opened her perspective to the purpose of live classical music performance.
In addition to Lindsay’s performing and teaching work in Madison, she is the Principal Oboist of the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra and English Hornist of the Quad Cities’ Symphony Orchestra. She previously was a member of the New Mexico Philharmonic and held a fellowship with Civic Orchestra of Chicago under the mentorship of the Chicago Symphony Association and Yo-Yo Ma.
In these uncertain times, many of us are in the same position: hunkered down, trying to get a handle on our new reality. Like organizations and businesses across the globe, we at the University of Wisconsin–Madison have made changes to keep our campus and community healthy and safe. While gifted UW researchers identify ways to understand and develop a vaccine for COVID-19, our campus experts are finding new, innovative ways to support and connect with Wisconsin residents.
We are pleased to offer Badger Talks LIVE…. a Facebook Live series intended to help you cope, stay engaged and thrive during these challenging times. Can't catch the live talks? Check out past talks here.
