Barry Phipps

James Watrous Gallery’s fall exhibit features photography that is unapologetically Midwestern. Curated by FlakPhoto’s Andy Adams, New Midwest Photography will feature works by 10 artists who focus directly on the people and landscapes of the heartland. Friday’s opening reception is followed by a discussion with Barry Phipps on his new book, Between Gravity and What Cheer: Iowa Photographs (7 pm, Central Library). On display through Oct. 28.

"Andy Adams has sparked and nurtured a remarkable online community through FlakPhoto, a digital channel dedicated to contemporary photography and visual culture," says Watrous Gallery director Jody Clowes. "We invited Adams to guest curate New Midwest Photography because of his passion and eye for great images, and because he's got his finger on the pulse of photography in our region."

• Exhibition dates: September 7 – October 28, 2018
• Opening reception (Free and open to the public): Friday, September 7, 5:00-7:00 pm, with informal gallery talks by the artists at 5:30 pm
• Post-reception talk (Free and open to the public): Friday, September 7, 7:00-8:00pm. Artist Barry Phipps will discuss his new book at Madison Public Library's BUBBLER. A FlakPhoto presentation in partnership with the Wisconsin Book Festival and the James Watrous Gallery.
• ArtBites, 10:30 am, Oct. 13: Drink coffee, eat quiche, browse the gallery, and chat with the creatives behind New Midwest Photography at Art Bites: FlakPhoto. For the first time, the culinary and visual arts will come together for a unique event in the James Watrous Gallery. We hope you join us for brunch and conversation with gallery director Jody Clowes, guest curator Andy Adams, and photographers Barry Phipps and Dave Jordano.Tickets are $20 for the general public and $15 for Academy members and students. Seating is limited. Advance registration required.
