Peter Cat Recording Co.
media release: The ever-evolving genre-bending India-based project Peter Cat Recording Co. announced their new album, BETA last week and today they are back with the first single from it “People Never Change”, a track that traces the consequences of choosing the way you wish you live and love. Driven by affable dance beats and horns, it’s a snapshot of what to expect from the album which forms a whimsical amalgamation of indie, alternative pop, psychedelic, and more.
Each album thus far has served as a temporal snapshot, capturing the members' personal evolution since their last offering, a painting of the living and the lived. With BETA their third installment out August 9th on Muddy Water the group's familial landscape expanded through marriage and childbirth. The band notes of the album: “BETA is a collection of stories about the future told 50 years in the past, to make sense of the present, on our only home, planet Earth.”
Produced by Suryakant Sawhney, Kartik Pillai, Dhruv Bhola, and Peter Cat Recording Co., BETA was one of five album titles that could have been. They wrote down all five, put them in a hat, and let the drummer Karan Singh's 6-month-old son reach in and pick. BETA emerged, an endearing word for "Child" in Hindi.
Tickets for the groups headline dates are on sale now. Part of a massive 77-date tour, with a mix of Khruangbin dates throughout the year, their own headline shows will begin August 23rd in Boise ID, hitting Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and more before returning overseas for many more dates, capped off with a six-date Indian tour concluding December 28 in Kolkata.
“For years one of India’s best-kept music secrets, Peter Cat Recording Co. is finally digging its paws into America." - VARIETY
“casually ambitious yet immaculately executed art rock… the band has touched on everything from big band and jazz-hop to synthesizer-bleeding indie pop in their formulation of a signature blend all their own. Consistent across every permutation of their work is the sonic currency of their cacophonous residence.” - STEREOGUM
There’s a lot to marvel at on any Peter Cat Recording Co. album: the crooner vocals, the gorgeous ornate instrumentation, the infectious choruses….Audiences unfamiliar with the New Delhi-based band can find joy within the fuzzy guitars and gorgeous trumpets, the subtle piano riffs hiding underneath orchestral flourishes… It harks back to the big band era, soaring through decades with its upbeat, catchy choruses which adds a layer of sheen. Lead singer’s Suryakant Sawhney’s voice adds woozy textures; it’s all very much a sound of the past rooted in the context of today.” - NME
“The band has earned a cult-like following around the world, thanks to frontman Suryakant Sawhney’s velvety croon and quietly charismatic stage presence. The rest of the band — Karan Singh (drums), Dhruv Bhola (bass and samples), Rohit Gupta (keys and trumpet), and Kartik Sundareshan Pillai (keyboards, guitar, electronics and trumpet) — bring a dazzling display of musical chops and depth to make for a sweepingly romantic live show. Find yourself living blissfully in a state of main character syndrome? This one’s for you.” - KCRW
