“A fascinating study in the development of understanding and rapport”-Bill Meyer, Downbeat Magazine
“The music’s miracle is hard to describe, the way in which light can suddenly grow….it’s always free jazz, but it removes any sense that the form might carry any limitations.”-Stuart Broomer, freejazzblog
A brand new quartet makes its debut this evening at Audio for the Arts! Assembled by journeyman Chicago saxophonist Dave Rempis, this new band features Mabel Kwan on piano, bassist and Madison-native Jakob Heinemann, and drummer Bill Harris. This lineup promises an interesting tension between diverse yet complimentary artistic visions. All four thrive in free improvising contexts. But while Rempis and Harris tend towards the high energy world of free jazz, pianist Kwan and bassist Heinemann are both known for their extensive work in the contemporary classical scene. This quartet grouping promises to jumble up the expectations of anyone familiar with their individual work in compelling new ways.
Their debut recording Truss came out earlier this year on Aerophonic Records, and tonight they return to Madison to celebrate that album’s release!
This event is BYOB.
Presented by BlueStem Jazz and Audio for the Arts.
