Unhood Yourself: The Real UW

press release: #TheRealUW is a movement stemming from the string of bias incidents that occurred on UW-Madison’s campus this academic year. With articles springing up on sites like Buzzfeed, The Huffington Post, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and BET, we the students of #TheRealUW planning committee put together this event to bring awareness of the experiences of people of color on this campus, to educate this campus on the history of this campus and the legacy that is being upheld, and to give students of color a platform to share their experiences in and around this campus in an open, receptive, and artistic space. We invite the University Students, the University faculty and staff, and the greater Madison community to this event in hopes to help bridge the gap between these communities while addressing an equally important problem for the residents of these communities.

Unhood Yourself is a one day only exhibition and show. It will be impossible to ignore the energy and passion that each of the artists bring to the Chazen. Here, they will live in expression and present the truth. Without veils, without anonymity, unhooded.

How can you help?

1. ATTEND! In order to continue to the momentum that has grown with this movement, we must be able to show that people care. We are a community that cares about all members within it, and we hope that in throwing this event, we give everyone who supports us and our cause an chance to show up and fellowship as people.

2. DONATIONS! As I am sure you are all well aware, event throwing can be a trying task especially when there are unresolved cost factors. We are in need donations to finish the process of transforming our visual campaign into prints that will serve as pieces in the gallery. We are also in need of donations for T-shirts for the students organizing this event. 3. SHARE THIS EVENT: We want this event to reach as many people as possible, so if you have a person, an organization, or a group of people that you think with would benefit from attending this event, BRING THEM!

4. PARTICIPATE: There will be an open mic portion of this show that is open to students from other campuses, community members, or anyone who has art that they would like to share. Please, if you fall under any of these categories and have art that connects to these topics, don't hesitate to share. We would like to start a tentative list for the open mic so please contact Jamie Dawson jamie.nick97@gmail if you would like to be added to this list.
