Wu Han

Pianist Wu Han, co-artistic director of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, takes her first turn with the UW Symphony Orchestra in the acoustically perfect Hamel Music Center. The award-winning musician will be the concerto soloist on Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37, in continuing recognition of the composer's 250th birth anniversary year. The orchestra also will perform Adès’ Suite No.1 from “Powder Her Face” and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 73.

press release: Internationally celebrated pianist Wu Han will perform as a concerto soloist with the UW-Madison Symphony Orchestra on March 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Hamel Music Center. They will perform Adès’s Suite No.1 from “Powder Her Face”; Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor, op. 37; and Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major, op. 73.

Named Musical America’s Musician of the Year, pianist Wu Han ranks among the most esteemed and influential classical musicians in the world today. Leading an unusually multifaceted artistic career, she has risen to international prominence as a concert performer, artistic director, recording artist, educator, and cultural entrepreneur. Wu Han appears annually at the world’s most prestigious concert series and venues, as both soloist and chamber musician. She tours extensively with cellist David Finckel, in trios with Philip Setzer, and in a quartet with Daniel Hope and Paul Neubauer.

Together with David Finckel, Wu Han serves as co-artistic director of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and they are the founding artistic directors of Music@Menlo, the San Francisco Bay Area’s premier summer chamber music festival and institute. Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts recently appointed Wu Han artistic advisor for chamber music at the Barns for 2018–19 and 2019–20. She is the first artistic advisor to hold the position for two full seasons. From 2011 to 2018, Wu Han served as founding co-artistic director of Chamber Music Today, an annual festival in Seoul, South Korea.

Wu Han’s wide-ranging musical activities include the launch of ArtistLed, classical music’s first musician-directed and Internet-based recording company. BBC Music Magazine recently saluted the label’s twentieth anniversary with a special cover CD featuring David Finckel and Wu Han. This new recording is to be released on the ArtistLed label in the fall. Through a variety of education initiatives, she has received universal praise for her passionate commitment to nurturing the artistic growth of countless young artists. Under the auspices of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, she also leads the LG Chamber Music School, which serves dozens of young musicians in South Korea annually. From 2013 to 2018, she led an intensive chamber music studio at the Aspen Music Festival and School.
