Your mother always told you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. For Crepe Sake! is dedicated to serving breakfast foods for the on-the-go college student. The owners have a child in college and the idea for the cart was inspired by that -- and a family recipe and a long-standing Sunday breakfast tradition. The cart parks at University Avenue and Charter Street.
Carol Johnson and her sister-in-law Nicole Beardsley operate the cart on weekdays from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. They say the line is busiest from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., so for true breakfast-goers, there's not much of a wait.
The price is college-friendly, too, with the most popular dish, Oh Crepe (three crepes and a mix-and-match selection of strawberry, chocolate and cinnamon sugar toppings) going for $2. The Dunkables are great when you're late to class: three warm crepes are served with an individual maple syrup dipping cup, also for $2. Another grab-and-go option is the Bag O' Donuts, five fresh fried doughnuts with cinnamon and sugar for $2. For the big breakfast eaters, the Holy Crepe includes Oh Crepe, Dunkables, and Bag O' Donuts for $5.
For a little added fun, the Kindergarten Crepes, two crepes filled with peanut butter and jelly, and the "Reesus" Crepes, two warm crepes with chocolate and peanut butter sauce, also come in at, yes, $2.
If you're looking for a bite for lunch, campus food is hard to find for less. For Crepe Sake offers three savory options for $3. The Crepe Poupon is two crepes with ham and swiss; the Tom and Cheddar is two crepes with smoked turkey and cheddar cheese; and a vegetarian option is the Popeye Crepe, two crepes with pan-seared spinach and feta cheese.
Soda, OJ, water and coffee are $1 and Vitamin Water and Monster Energy Drink are $2.
If students are on campus, For Crepe Sake! will be too. Johnson says she and her partner plan to stay open this semester and next, weather permitting. For more info, call 608-332-0912.
