UP: Public safety. Wisconsin hunters shot only 10 buildings, both homes and barns, during deer gun hunting season last November, down from 25 in 2008 and 19 in 2007. Officials credit an initiative to paint all buildings blaze orange (kidding!).
DOWN: Gamblers. A record 14,604 people called the Problem Gambling Helpline last year, seeking help for gambling addiction. "The economy is likely one factor affecting the increase in calls," says hotline executive director Rose Gruber. "Accessibility to gaming may be another factor, along with increased awareness...."
DOWNER: Domestic violence victims. The number of state deaths due to domestic violence jumped from 36 in 2008 to 59 last year. This includes seven domestic-abuse-related homicides in Dane County.
