UP: UW-Madison. The university receives more than $16.5 million from Ethel Allen, a longtime benefactor. Allen, who graduated from the school in 1930 with a master's degree in bacteriology, died in May. She left the bulk of the money to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for research; other beneficiaries include the School of Nursing, the Chazen Museum of Art and the Allen Centennial Gardens - which was named for Ethel and her husband, Oscar.
DOWN: Henry Vilas Zoo. The zoo's last remaining giraffe, Raymond Junior, or RJ, is euthanized after he ruptures a ligament in his leg and is unable to stand on his own. Zookeepers say the 7-year-old giraffe's condition would not have improved. Last month, the zoo also lost RJ's father to a degenerative bone condition, and a 35-year-old orangutan, Teriang, to heart failure.
