As massive frozen flakes swirl and fall this Monday afternoon in yet another round of winter weather, what better setting is there for a look at what might be the most iconic local television commercial aired in Madison over the last few decades.
Folks around south-central Wisconsin who have tuned on their tubes as far back as the late '70s might recognize these repeated lyrics as the refrain to a 30-second spot for Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne.
"What I remember are the ads for Pizza Pit," writes one fan of the spot that can once again be seen on Madison airwaves this winter. "The best one: off-screen voices sing 'Let It Snow' while a paper-doll version of a Pizza Pit delivery car gets pushed around on a table while someone from above dumps fake snow on it -- the fake snow is coming down in clumps and handfuls. The fact that the 'animation' and 'special effects' were so blatantly cheap and tacky was what made them memorable."

"Pizza Pit is slowly going extinct in Madison, but their thin crust pizza with the zesty sauce still remains a classic and reliable choice," writes one person reminiscing about the local pie purveyors. "And, I think anyone who grew up here in the '80s has a soft spot for the holiday commercial with 'Let It Snow' and a little Chevette driving thru a Mr. Rogers-esque neighborhood while flour is dumped down, burying the car as it continues on it quest to deliver the Pit. Ahhh, the nostalgia."
