Here’s what you need to know coming out of the Iowa caucuses.
- Donald Trump is a loser. He’s a stupid, incompetent man. He ran a terrible campaign. I like people who win Iowa. What happened was that his voters didn’t show up, and they won’t show up down the line either. This is a great relief, but even when Trump is gone, the “Trumpeters” (maybe 14 million of them) will still be around, making you wonder what’s wrong with America.
- Cruz won’t cruise to the nomination. Remember President Huckabee? President Santorum? Iowa leads the world in very conservative evangelical Christian voters, but they don’t pick winners. If Cruz did find a way to snatch the nomination, that would be a gift to Democrats. I think Cruz would agree that that can’t be in God’s plan.
- Look out for Marco Rubio. Rubio won the Iowa caucuses by finishing third. He’s now the establishment candidate who is acceptable to the tea party. Now’s the time to go home if your name is Bush, Christie or Kasich. And Rubio has always been the Republicans’ best candidate in the general election. When he runs against Clinton he can make a “past versus future” argument that could resonate.
- Hillary Clinton will be the Democrats’ nominee. Yeah, I know it was a toss-up in Iowa and Bernie should win in New Hampshire, but after that it’s all over as the states start to look less like very big college campuses.
So, it’ll be the establishment candidates in the end: Clinton and Rubio. Can we just skip the rest of this process, enjoy the baseball season, and come back to all this in September?
