It's tempting to portray David Blaska as someone liberals love to hate. The truth is actually harsher: They just sort of hate him.
Over the years, in his various roles - as newspaper reporter, County Board supervisor, political commentator and, since 2007, Isthmus blogger - Blaska has been Madison's number-one right-wing raconteur. He's sometimes snotty and perhaps a bit mean, but often his barbs hurt because they're on the mark.
And Blaska can be delightfully self-deprecating - not that this relieves others of the burden they feel to pass judgment on him. His 2006 Isthmus cover story ruminating on the terminus of his County Board career is almost joyous in its dour pithiness, like Blaska himself.
