Once you get past the pretty pink popsicles on the cover, you will find inside this week's Isthmus the 32nd edition of the Annual Manual. This An Man provides resource listings, the restaurant guide, and Madison's Favorites, as chosen by the readership; plus words of wisdom to Madison newcomers as gleaned from that same Favorites Poll conducted in June. Oh, and plenty of maps too.
Looking forward to coming endeavors: The deadline for Isthmus Indies nominations is this Sunday, Aug. 26. To refresh your memory, we're looking for local artists and business people who exemplify various traits of entrepreneurship and/or sustainable practices. We've got upwards of 30 nominations so far and hope for more. For more information, including definitions of the eight categories, visit IsthmusIndies.com.
As you may know, the Republican National Convention takes place starting next Monday in Tampa, Fla. Although historically a nominating convention, this one will be more like a coronation, anointing the pre-chosen candidate Mitt Romney and his handpicked running mate, Paul Ryan. Thanks to arrangements secured by radio station WORT, Isthmus staffer Joe Tarr will be attending both parties' conventions and reporting from them.
The Repubs have a distinctly Wisconsin flavor, what with the aforementioned Ryan, a U.S. representative from Janesville, and the party chairman, Reince Priebus, a state party stalwart. Tarr will be talking to local delegates and, we hope, finding items of interest to report from within what I expect will be a tightly controlled environment. No rape questions allowed!
The next week, Sept. 4-6, Tarr will visit the Democrats at their party extravaganza in Charlotte, N.C. From both sites Tarr will be reporting on WORT, tweeting on his account (@tarrjoe) and filing daily reports on TheDailyPage.com. He'll also be showing up in the paper the next two weeks with further news from the Wisconsin delegations. All these reports will be accumulated in the Election 2012 blog on TheDailyPage.com.
